About TISS
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work to create human service professionals to work with people in difficult situations. In 1944, the School was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the institute as it was declared a deemed university under section 3 University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. Since then TISS has been fully funded by the UGC, Government of India. TISS is a unique centrally funded public university focusing on teaching, research, training, policy work and outreach programmes in social sciences. TISS works with a strong trans-disciplinary orientation, with a strong interface with the society and various stakeholders towards deploying knowledge generated for creation of ecologically sustainable, equitable and just society.
Today, TISS is a multi-location networked teaching and research university with campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad offering over 45 highly competitive, socially relevant M.A./M.Sc./M.P.H./M.H.A. programmes in inter and trans-disciplinary areas of social work, health, education, management, development, habitat and climate sciences. The institute has over 160 full-time highly accomplished faculty members involved in teaching, research, policy influencing and institution building activities. Currently, the Mumbai campus has over 1600 Masters and 380 Doctoral students. In 2009, TISS was re-accredited by NAAC and was awarded Grade ‘A’ with a score of 3.88 out of 4.
TISS is a unique institution which works in almost all parts of the country- Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Kashmir, 9 Conflict affected states in the Eastern, Central and Western parts of the country, North-Eastern India- engaged in building capacity of local communities and public institutions; research and action on livelihoods, climate change and adaptation, disaster management, and work with various groups needing special care, etc.
Since its inception in 1936, the Vision of TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to the changing social realities through development and application of knowledge towards creating a people-centered and ecologically sustainable society that promotes and protects the dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all, with special emphasis on marginalized and vulnerable groups. In pursuance of its vision and guiding principles, TISS has organized teaching programmes to facilitate the development of competent and committed professionals for practice, research and teaching; undertakes research; develops and disseminates knowledge; and reaches out to the larger community through extension at the local, regional and national levels.
